What would you do with the power to stop time? Would you use it to help people? Or maybe you would use it for your own benefit regardless of how legal. Rob a few banks undetected, sneak into movie theaters without paying; much can be accomplished with such an ability.  Sam takes things a bit further. At the age of five, the child used the ability to murder a kindergarten teacher right in the middle of class. Thus, a serial killer with a horrifying gift was born.  Two decades later and the murders have not slowed down. The students of the kindergarten class have grown up, each one greatly affected by the tragedy from their childhood. Some became so obsessed with trying to capture the elusive killer, they created an organization to do so. But with unlimited suspects and no means to defend themselves, the former students will experience a dreadful sense of futility and despair like never before.

Freeze Kill David Kreinberg Books

While the cast is a lovable bunch you'll root for as they investigate the crimes in the story, Freeze Kill is not for the queezy; the author pulls no punches as he explores his villain's psyche. He does a wonderful job switching between perspectives, keeping the pace the story constantly moving and never dawdling. The characters are wonderfully realized, I found myself being drawn into their individual stories and insecurities.

Recommended for readers who like mysteries with mysterious powers.

Freeze Kill David Kreinberg Books Reviews

Freeze Kill was a very interesting read with its unique take on a long cherished ability. Anyone would leap on the opportunity to have the power to halt time. But here in this book it seemed to instead of offering a take on the lighter funner things of that ability to instead place us in the path of a murderer who enjoys killing in the most gruesome ways. These ways are rather creative and just baffling to see and at times close to being borderline extreme, maybe even simply appalling. It sure did leave me in thought about them as they even went beyond the freak accidents that occasionally happen in the real world.

Beyond that aspect of the story, the wide cast of characters all tied to the incident in their elementary school endeavours was a highlight. I grew to love many of them including Max as the favorite and most personable one as well as the smart and well written and developed Alex. Choosing graduate student aged folks made it feel rather different than other thrillers using either young college students or married families. It just seemed as if this is an unexplored age group with characters on fire for their fields and passion and others at the start of their careers who are fullset on ready to take on the world. Additionally it did add a special flavor seeing how far characters had come from from their troubled past to the present day with mental issues and all.

This was definitely a must read and one to get the mind thinking about the ways to capture the killer and discover their identity. The early portion of the story did feel slow in the character introduction stage but the takes on the killer's point of view carried things through these slow times. Only fault for the series was the usual issue in ability based stories in the origin of the ability never being stated and pretty terrible written rules regarding it.

Check it out.

Hopefully Kreinberg does pursue the writing of another story in the same genre.
What was Tina's reaction?
I'm not sure if the author is a doctor of some kind, but I suspect he very likely is, as his knowledge of freezing and killing is unrivaled by anyone else in the book or, in my approximation, outside of it.

The plot is simple on paper - a guy named Sam (possibly short for Samuel - the author leaves this unknown so the reader has to use their imagination) gains the ability to freeze time, and does so. More than just that, though, this book offers DOUBLE the things for the price of only one - not only does he FREEZE, he KILLS. What follows is a complex Lovecraftian tale of freezing and killing, eventually culminating in the freezing and killing of the statue of liberty (although most readers won't pick up on this, as the in-book description has almost nothing to do with it, such subtext, very deep, wow), and eventually loops right around to hit you in your MIND. That's right - it goes there, it raises the question, what would YOU do if YOU could freeze and kill things? I would probably freeze and kill things, personally, but I hope you are of a finer moral fabric than Sam(uel?) and I.

Unfortunately, I do have to deduct a star. The book is bizarrely slanted more towards freezing than killing, and I think there's a lot of wasted potential there. Additionally, I'm not sure why Sam doesn't have a pet frog. I'm not why that wasn't a subplot, as frogs symbolize time and the afterline in Sam(uel?)'s cultural background. Still, I look forward to Dr. K-Burg's next title on either or killing, perhaps with a bit more focus toward the latter.
I bought this back when it was available for Nook, but I thought I'd leave a review here as well.

All I can say is, what a unique story. Casting a time stopper as a serial killer is interesting enough, but the present-tense 1st to past-tense 3rd person perspective-shifting really elevated it further. While there were times that it fell flat, the fact it was used to great effect for a majority of the book is really impressive. It worked so well with the many twists and turns present, giving it an identity that could not exist in any other medium.

The writing did tend to ramble on at parts, but the core story and usage of distinct perspective switches more than made up for it. Great characters, great and brutal plot, great conclusion; definitely more than I expected. Even if you aren't a fan of the plot and dialogue, it's easy to recommend this for the novelty alone.
