Classified as ‘popular science’, this book spans various disciplines such as psychology, physics, biology, philosophy and ethology, to mention but a few. The author takes the reader on a whirlwind journey through the main tenets of biocentrism, which theory argues that life is central to being, reality, and the cosmos. Most importantly, the book claims that life creates the universe rather than the other way around.

In contrast to an understanding of the world in which the evolution of Homo sapiens is almost incidental to ‘the way things really are’, it is proposed that knowledge is always the product of a living entity and its perceived environment.
This means that awareness and knowing things are not just the prerogative of human beings, but of all beings, whether they are micro-organisms or plants, trees, insects, fish or mammals.

A deeper understanding of how early life forms coped with their primeval environment leads seamlessly to a greater appreciation of the wondrous nature and splendour of life. Consistent with this perspective is the emphasis on the ethical treatment of all living beings, emphasising the value, rights and survival of individual organic beings

After all, we are all ‘knowing beings’ within our own reality.

In this book the author takes us on a whirlwind tour of biocentrism; i.e. the idea that life created the physical reality we live in and not the other way around. This concept is based on the notion of the primacy of consciousness, or awareness, advocated by idealist scholars such as Bishop Berkeley, scientists like James Jeans and philosophers such as Kant, Hegel and Schopenhauer. As the author of this book acknowledges, the origin of idealism goes back as far as the Neo-Platonists in the 3rd Century AD and the start-up of major religions like Hinduism and Buddhism in the 5th Century AD.
However, “Knowing Being” transforms Robert Lanza’s interpretation of biocentrism by replacing the importance of experiments in particle physics with a description of the psychological dimension of evolution; i.e. examining the notion of evolution in terms of the experience of being alive. Concepts such as space and time and causality are no longer taken for granted and at face value but appreciated as constructs which living things require in order to interact with their environment.
This particular direction allows this well qualified author (he has a PhD in Psychology with a special interest in epistemology) to suggest that the physical world we perceive around us is only apparent; and that objects and processes in the physical world derive their existence from our perception of them. This perception is not a passive awareness of something that already exists, but an active process which constructs the reality around each life form. That awareness, which leads to knowledge about its environment, helps each and every living being, whether insect, animal, bird, reptile or fish, to understand its reality – without which it could neither live nor survive.
This particular version of biocentrism is not only explained in a clear and comprehensive manner, but also its influence on many aspects of life, and nature in general, is described in some detail. For instance, how the newborn human baby has to fashion its own reality, or how altered states of mind brought about by dreams, drugs, paranormal experiences, mental illness and technology such as augmented and virtual reality gadgets result in alterations in reality.
The book concludes with an overview of the intelligence of all lifeforms and a plea to rethink the relationship between humans and nature. It advocates a paradigmatic change in attitude towards a more enlightened treatment of other sentient beings so as to relieve the suffering of the many currently caged and tortured animals and to support a change to a more humane society. His final appeal is for humans to acknowledge that all living beings are sentient and deserve our respect.
